Bar & WC Cattle + Feed

It is a genuinely unusual thing to buy, so here is the whole of it: what you get on day one, what happens each year, what you pay and when, and when beef actually reaches your table.

The Short Version

You buy a bred mama cow that lives one of our ranches. Ether at Bar WC Ranch in Iron County, Utah or WC Ranch in Washington County, Utah. The ranch raises her and every calf she has. The calves are yours too, so the herd you own grows each year. You decide which animals stay in the herd and/or which go to the butcher for your family's freezer.

You get

Live cattle in your name, plus every calf they produce.

You do

Nothing day to day. Bar WC Ranch handles care, grazing, health and breeding.

You choose

Whether each animal grows the herd or fills the freezer.

Year by Year

What the First Three Years Look Like

Starting with a single bred cow. Timings move with the animal and the season, and the ranch will give you the real dates for your own cattle as they happen.

You buy a bred mama cow

You choose your animal at Bar WC Ranch, where your cattle will live. She is already bred when you buy her, so her first calf is on the way before she is even yours.

Your first calf is born in year one

The ranch sends photos. The calf belongs to you from the moment it hits the ground, and you can name it if you want. Plenty of owners do.

The calf is weaned and your cow is bred back

Weaning runs five to seven months. Once the calf is independent, Bar WC Ranch breeds your cow back, so the next one is already on the way while the first is still growing.

A heifer joins your herd, a steer grows out

A female calf stays and becomes a mama cow of her own in time. A male calf go to a different part of the ranch to grow on grass toward harvest weight. Either way your herd is bigger than the one you bought.

Beef reaches your table

Your first steer finishes on grass at roughly two years old. You arrange processing with a facility Bar WC Ranch works with, then collect your beef. Meanwhile your mama cow keeps calving.
